As I implied on Twitter, I’ve been suffering from insomnia for the last month or so; been averaging about three hours of sleep per night, lately. Finally got myself a prescription for sleeping tablets yesterday, and so I’ve at last had a proper night’s sleep. And it’s amazing the difference from getting a good night’s sleep, even just in terms of general outlook on life. I hadn’t realised just how much lack of sleep was affecting me, even outside of simple tiredness.
With any luck, I’ll only need to take the tablets for a week. I’m looking forward to getting off them, because my schedule for taking them starts making me drowsy in the early evening; means I’m not actually being as productive as I’d like. I’m still trying to make further progress on MMORPG Tycoon 2, but my brain does seem to be shutting down early, at the moment.
With that said, the unlimited zooming actually works startlingly well. It’s something that I’d always assumed would be highly problematic and so had just been designing around, but now that I’ve tried it, it just works. I can zoom all the way out, paint mountains on the terrain, and then zoom right back in and see the painted mountains in high detail. There are no big performance problems (there are a few, but it seems like a tractable problem), and I didn’t have to write much additional code to support it at all. There’s a subtle issue with the borders between tiles of low-resolution terrains, which my brain isn’t working well enough to actually debug right now (although I do have a general suspicion about what’s happening). I’ll get to that soon.
In other news, I’m going to be doing another Game in a Week next week, assuming that I’m off the sleeping tablets. My plan years ago was to do one Game in a Week every month, and I’d like to actually do that. Probably not going to do another big 3D one, though; those always take a lot more time to complete than I expect them to, so I have to release things before they’re really finished.
